Neil Lasher

Neil Lasher, Managing Director of Trainer1, called today from London. He was using TalkTalk, an incredible service offering in 70% of the UK. For about $30/month, Neil gets free local calls, free national calls, and free international calls AND an 8 MB broadband net connection.

Neil figures eLearning is in the “clown stage.” He told me about a guy who could never forget the time his instructor came to the first morning of a workshop wearing a clown suit. After lunch the instructor waddled in dressed in Scuba gear; all afternoon they listened to his Darth-Vader breathing through his diving mask.

Did people come back the next day? How could they not come back? Everyone came back for more. And what was the instructor wearing? An ordinary business suit.

So you remember the workshop? asked Neil. You bet. And what was it about? I have no idea, came the reply. And that’s why eLearning is in the clown stage now.

Neil’s going to be leading two-day workshops on instructional design in Atlanta later this month and Boston August 31 – September 1. Neil has replaced ADDIE with AAAA: Attraction, Attention, Availability and Application. You might want to check out his AAAA white paper on the Trainer1 site.

You might be intersted to know that at the recent London showcase conference of the eLearning Network — the UK’s leading community of eLearning professionals — three separate UK eLearning leaders made reference to the content of the recently published Instructional Design (ID) paper by Neil Lasher, one of the UK’s leading independent eLearning consultancy and development specialists and managing director of Trainer1. One expert presented Lasher’s views on ID during a main conference session along with Bloom, Gagne, Keller and Honey & Mumford — all of whom have had significant impact on learning techniques. Already, Lasher’s ID course has attracted a great deal of interest -– with delegates attending from organisations including Nestle, General Motors, Bayer, Hewlett Packard and Procter & Gamble.

Bob, I see that you are Neil’s PR agent. That’s okay, but when you comment on your clients here, I’d prefer that you disclose your relationship with them. When I read that one expert presented Lasher’s views along with Bloom, Gagne, etc., I thought to myself, “Hold on a minute: those guys are dead.” Probably a cross-pond translation error.

You should all know that Jay never sleeps, I spoke to him at 2am (London Time) and by breakfast he not only had this on the blog (thanks Jay) but was till answering emails…

Jay – In case folks want any more information on Neil & his class, I’ve been blogging about it as well at http://www.writetech.net/2006/06/theres_still_ti.html and http://www.writetech.net/2006/05/more_than_instr.html. I would love for a few more people to sign up for this class. I’m excited that Neil is coming to the US for his seminar and I would really like him to come back and conduct a few more.
