Here’s a rarity. This afternoon I led a session on participatory learning for the Future of Education conference being hosted by the University of Manitoba’s Learning Technologies Center.

For about half an hour, I talked about these ingredients and what we might make from them.
This was hosted by Elluminate. Elluminate’s not bad, as these things go. Sound was clear. Interface was simple. I have a problem with the metaphor. It’s a lecture tool. One-way. Sure, people could write or talk feedback but the medium does not encourage it. It’s like most blogs: Here, kid, read my stuff.

Hi Jay,
Have to take issue with your comment that Elluminate (and other products like ours) are just lecture tools. As marketing consultant for the company, I have talked to hundreds of customers who tell me how the product has helped them transform the online teaching and learning experience. And this is no marketing hype!
For example, one teacher is using Elluminate Live! for virtual field trips like to interview the cast of Rent and to view laproscopic surgery and talk with the doctor.
A mom is using it to set up a teaching cooperative for homeschooling, an artist for a virtual studio, a company for employment interviews, a non-profit to collaborate globally. The list is almost endless. Really.
With this technology (and it doesn’t have to be ours), I think we are only limited by our imaginations. Seriously.

Beth, okay, I’ll buy that. I can understand how Elluminate could be applied in many different contexts. Thanks for opening my eyes. jay
