Gott mit uns

Travel challenges the traveler with questions. Given two entirely different takes on how the world works, which best maps to reality?

For example, this scroll hangs in many Colombian shops. If you believe in God, why not ask him to help out with the business?

In the late sixties, Dylan sang “God on our side.”

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

This morning I stumbled upon an online collection of German postcards from the time of World War I. “God is with us.”

Does God play both sides?

As Lincoln said, we had better hope that it is we who are on God’s side.

If God plays sides, then we’re all in trouble.

Maybe the question should be, “Do we play both sides?”
