The Seventh International Conference on Neuroesthetics

by Jay Cross on December 15, 2007

Every year I attend the free Conference on Neuroesthetics at U.C. Berkeley. One year, the topic was how and why the brain responds to such things as gourmet food, fine wine and aromatic perfumes. Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Randall Graham gave a wonderful presentation on “The Gout de Terroir.” Three years ago a professor from the University of Parma described the discovery of mirror neurons, and Paul Ekman “explained and illustrated how to enhance the recognition of how others are feeling, sometimes before they know they are becoming emotional; sometimes when they are trying to conceal how they feel.”

Attending a conference with a bunch of neuroscientists sounds daunting but it’s not. With the exception of slides of brain scans (that look like ink blots to me), the discourse is in plain English. Join me!
