I hate to appear politically incorrect, but my regard for Slavic peoples is going downhill in a hurry. Nine out of ten comments to this blog are Cyrillic spam. Are things that boring in Belarus or Macedonia or Russia or wherever the hell this nonsense is originating that people find out-and-out vandalism fun?

Jay,
here in Russia we have the same problem because of the same people. The reason is not because they are Slavic but because our law enforcement agencies don’t care at all about computer crime (as well as about other types of crime). Especcially when it happens outside of the country. We have the same political system as in some not very developed African states but lot of educated people, computers and networks. What you see is a result.
Alexey, I understand. I also shot my mouth off in frustration. Everyday I get a dozen spams that someone took the trouble to keep ahead of the guardians against this crap. I appreciate that the deviants are no more representative of the Slavic peoples than W is of me.

Jay, my blog has nowhere near the exposure yours does, but I can tell you that when it comes to comments, my spam:serious ratio is just shy of 100:1.
Fortunately, two WordPress plugins (Akismet and WP-Ban) block this nonsense so effectively that I go weeks without ones having to review a “possible spam” comment.
Everything Alexey says is true — in addition, many if not most spam comments are generated by botnets. It’s not someone sitting in his basement, bored; it’s essentially a criminal enterprise taking advantage of hundreds of thousands of PCs whose owners can’t or won’t secure them.
