RIP, Latte the ferocious miniature dachshund

by Jay Cross on December 23, 2008

Poppy Lane is somber this evening. Latte, our treasured red, miniature, long-haired dachshund died in Uta’s arms a few minutes ago.

Fourteen years ago I brought Uta a birthday gift in a large cardboard box. When she opened it up, she was startled to find something moving inside. I’d just driven Latte down from the puppy farm in Sebastopol.

Latte was always a feisty dog. Many years ago our letter carrier bravely sauntered into our yard. He bent down to pet Latte, who promptly bit him on the calf. Latte was quarantined for two months, and the Postal Service refuses to leave mail inside our fence to this day. The biting incident netted us one of my favorite items in our immense collection of dachshundiana: this official warning that inadvertently got delivered one day with the mail:

“2 miniature dachshunds!”

Hey Jay – sorry to hear about your loss. After 14 years of companionship, it takes time to readjust.

Love the postal service memo! Looks like you’re raising some violent animals :) .

As a totally besotted dog lover the news of any humans losing their dog companion is always sad. Vale Latte.
And what a statement about how a reputation is formalised by ‘the system’ – one calf chomp and you double in impact and get labelled forever. If only positive actions could have such sustained impact on the system.

We got the SAME POSTAL WARNING card dropped in front of our house once about our miniature dachshund (who can’t even get outside when the carrier is here, it was based on his barking inside the house!)

…and of course, I am so sorry for your loss. What a great life your dog must have had.

Jay, do not know if we are related. I lost my smooth dachshund, Penny, after 15 years on 12/7. Although she did not get an official USPS warning, she would have loved it! My mother nicknamed her the “Tonya Harding of Dachshunds”. She was a very tough little girl.

I am sorry for your loss. I can empathize all too well.
