It’s in the genes

Our dog Cappuccino is a miniature long-haired dachshund, also known as a kaninchenhund. Dachshund is German for badger dog; kaninchenhund means bunny dog.

Cappuccino has no interest in chasing sticks or tennis balls. She’s oblivious to the deer we see on our walks in the neighborhood. Her main pastimes are barking at passersby, begging for affection, and sleeping. So we were surprised by what happened when I put a stuffed bunny on the ground in front of her.

Cappuccino instinctively put the bunny in her jaws. Occasionally she would give it a chomp, startling herself when a squeaker inside let out a noise. Our fellow pet owners will understand when I say that this was about the cutest thing we’d ever seen.

Funny thing, though, the dog didn’t know what to do with the bunny once she had “caught” it.

I wonder what she’ll think of these…

…and it makes me ponder how much of my own behavior is the result of my genetic programming.

Happy Easter!

My little dog, Buddy, is a mixed chihuahua and dachshund, thus he chases other animals as if they are badgers. When he chases a squirrel up a tree he immediately starts digging at the base of the tree — knowing if he digs deep enough he will soon find the squirrel in the bottom of the hole :-)
