Project to define eLearning

Background

On November 18, 1999, a dozen eLearning Industry leaders sat around a table in Silicon Valley and agreed on the need for a quick & easy way to explain this market to anyone who asks. We wanted

  1. "the elevator pitch" for analysts, investors, prospective customers, and vendors
  2. a concise, simple presentation covering market dynamics, a map of the market, and what it all means

Five meetings and four months later,

  1. many ideas had been put on the table
  2. we had pawed through a cornucopia of geometric models and blind alleys
  3. everyone had networked with some interesting people
  4. we didn't seem to progressing toward our objective.

Only three or four of the participants ever completed any work outside of the meetings, an indication that working for the good of the industry simply didn't rank high enough to warrant the time of some very busy people. Mark and I and a few others have ulterior motives in getting on with the work at hand. Last Thursday, Mark and I agreed that he and I would divvy up the project as follows:

  1. Jay: presentation of elearning, market drivers, philosophies, benefits, downside, trends, future
  2. Mark: market conditions, Chasm analysis, observations
  3. TBD: positioning of players (which Jay will take a first crack at)

This morning I mind-mapped the form and substance of what I envision as a working web site. Comments are welcome. Like eLearning itself, this stream of information will always be changing. My goal is to polish this off today and tomorrow. (Sunshine would interfere with this plan.)
