ACM Association for Computing Machinery

Association for Internet Professionals. The San Francisco Chapter has great monthly meetings. On the national level, IICS, the International Interactive Communications Society, is being folded into AIP.

ASTD, American Society for Training & Development, is the major training industry trade association. A few years back, ASTD took over SALT, the Society for Applied Learning Technology. ASTD was chaffing under its obsolete name. "American" is too narrow in our global economy; "training" is out while "learning" is in. After a full year of study, surveys, focus groups, and identity consultants, the new identity was announced. It's "ASTD." The change is that the letters no longer stand for anything.

CEdMa Computer Education Management Association

eLearningForum. Formerly the Silicon Valley eLearning Network. Join. It's free.

IRL, the Institute for Research on Learning, disbanded 3/2000. Many programs and staff migrated into WestEd. Others split off to form a for-profit consultancy, Strategic Practices Group.

ISA Instructional Systems Association, is a terrific trade association for training vendor executives. Mainly soft skills. ITTA Information Technology Training Association, is the technical training counterpart of ISA.

ISPI International Society for Performance Improvement, Silicon Valley Chapter. Keeping up with the times: The National Society for Programmed Instruction became the National Society for Performance Instruction, later renamed the International Society for Performance Improvement. ISPI keeps the instructional design flame burning.

National Skill Standards Board

NBMA North Bay Multimedia Association

Software Forum is home to budding entrepreneurs. The Software Entrepreneurs Forum morphed into the Software Development Forum, which merged with the Center for Software Development to form the current organization. Many SIGs, sometimes a great speaker at the monthly dinner.
