Pinning Down The Benefits of Visual Learning
by Jay Cross, Internet Time Group

People who have seen Eileen Clegg's graphic interpretations clarify complex situations tell us they know their organizations need this. It's a visceral response. It just feels right. They can't find the words for it. Which is appropriate, since her focus is telling stories that words alone cannot convey. This is why it's difficult to describe Eileen's process to people who haven't shared in the experience.

Permit me to make a couple of suggestions. Start by identifying the benefits you expect to receive. Check the samples on this site. Let your mind wander over the possibilities. What benefits are you looking for?

Bring deeper understanding to complex subject matter
Share results of dynamic meetings with others
Help senior team “see the big picture” and focus attention
Improve the decision-making process
Integrate new initiative throughout an organization
Speed adoption of major change
Help everyone picture their role in organizational transformation

To sell the concept of visual learning in your organization, use a visual aid. My friends at XPLANE, The Visual Thinking Company, created this overview to accompany an article of mine that will appear in the February issue of T+D magazine:
