Performance-Centered Design

Sharing many examples of award winning best practices in workflow learning, Gary Dickelman, advised that performance centered methodology is related to workflow learning in many ways. “Performance is an intersection between processes, human factors, and information architecture,” stated Dickelman.

Dickelman argued that we should be focused on mitigating drops in performance and raising competence levels. “The real reason we need performance management is the average person has the attention span of a ferret after two cappuccinos.”

Gary Dickelman summarized his presentation by recommending that we move away from an environment model toward more of an ecological model in how we deploy knowledge by extracting organizational memory. He described three possible categories:

  • Look at workflow;
  • Catalog knowledge, and;
  • Spread it into a web environment.
